Lesson 01: The Conquest of Makkah

On the occasion of treaty of Hudaibiyah in 6 Hijri, Banu Bakr announced that they would support the Quraish in Makkah, and the Banu Khuza'ah from the Arab tribes became allies of the Muslims. An agreement was done that the parties would not fight each other for ten years, but eighteen (18) months later, Banu Bakr broke the peace agreement and attacked Banu Khuza'ah and imposed a fight on Banu Khuza'ah in Haram Kaaba. Banu Khuza'ah asked Muslims to help.

Prophet Muhammad sent a peace message to Quraish Makkah based on threeconditions that either they pay the 'diyat' of the dead of Banu Khuza'ah or withdraw from the agreement or end the peace and declare war. Quraish Makkah chose to fight. Finally, on 8 Hijri 10 Ramadan, Muslims reached the outskirts of Makkah with an army of about 10,000. At Mar- Azahran, the Holy Prophet appointed Hazrat Khalid bin Waleed commander of Maimana (right side), Hazrat Zubair as commander of Maysara (left side) and Hazrat Abu Ubaidah as commander of the infantry. His flag was with Hazrat Zubair . Holy Prophet was saying, today Allah Almighty will give special glory to the Holy Kaaba and today the Kaaba will be given a new cover. After a short skirmish, the Islamic army entered the city of Makkah.

Among the Quraish of Makkah, people like Abu Sufyan, Budail bin Warqa and Hakeem bin Hizam embraced Islam. Despite the presence of an army of 10,000, the Holy Prophet issued instructions to the Companions to give shelter to anyone who seeks refuge, not to kill women and children. Also anyone who seek refuge in the house of Abu Sufyan, will be in peace. There is peace for all those who surrender or close the doors of their house. On the occasion of the conquest of Makkah, the Holy Prophet was overwhelmed with feelings of humility and modesty. He was riding on his camel 'Qaswa' and his head was resting on the hump of camel. He was reciting Surah Al-Fatah. Finally the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad said that today I declare the same behaviour with all of you as Hazrat Yousaf had done with his brothers. Addressing all the people of Makkah, he said, Go, you all are free today, today you will not be held accountable for anything. The people of Makkah were very impressed by this kindness and forgiveness of the Holy Prophet (s) and they started embracing Islam in droves. On the occasion of the conquest of Makkah, this act of the Messenger of Allah, i.e. forgiving his worst enemies, is a glorious example of forgiveness. Then the Holy Prophet and Hazrat Alipurified the Kaaba from three hundred and  sixty idols. The Holy Prophet () was holding a stick in his hand with which he was turning the idols upside down and reciting these verses of the Holy Quran:

جَاءَ الْحَقُّ وَزَهَقَ الْبَاطِلُ إِنَّ الْبَاطِلَ كَانَ زَهُوقاً

Translation:

"Truth has come and falsehood has vanished. Falsehood is surely bound to vanish."(Surah Bani Israil: 81)

The Holy Prophet offered prayer inside the House of Allah, came out, then handed over the key of Khana Ka'aba to Hazrat Usman Bin Talha and kissed the black stone. Hazrat Bilal climbed on the roof of the Kaaba and gave the Azaan. A huge number of men and women embraced Islam on the blessed hand of Hazrat Muhammad. As a result of the conquest of Makkah, all the tribes of the Quraish accepted Islam day by day, that only in ten days, two thousand people embraced Islam. The religion of Islam gained dominance. Islam and the people of Islam gained greatness, the conspiracies of enemies came to an end and the leadership abilities of the Holy Prophet borne fruit. He stayed for a few days in Makkah and appointed Hazrat Uttab bin Usayd as the Ameer of Makkah and sent troops of Mujahideen to destroy the huge shrines in the vicinity of Makkah.
